My 46 year-old uncle who lived in Mobile, AL was run over by a drunk driver last night and killed. Please remember his widow, his 2 step sons, and his 13 year-old son in your prayers. Also, his 3 sisters.
Jay was the youngest of the children, my mom being the oldest. Jay and I were only 6 years apart and grew up together more like close cousins than uncle/nephew.
After watching the football games Saturday night with his wife, 2 step sons, his son, and his oldest step son's girlfriend, he obliged the stepson's girlfriend to take her for a ride on the motorcycle. The step son followed on his motorcycle. They were about a block from the house when an SUV coming at them swerved into their lane. Jay laid the bike down to avoid the collision, which he did, but they were apparently then run over by the SUV. Both Jay and the 17 year old girl were pronounced dead at the scene. The accident is still under investigation and we don't have any more details.
Jay's 13 year-old son lives with his mother in MS and this was Jay's visitation weekend, so my cousin was at the house when this tragedy occurred.
We buried Jay's mother, my grandmother, just a few weeks ago, and we are all struggling with this second loss in our family.

I just got an update, and it may not have been a drunk after all. Apparently, it was just someone who was running late for work and decided to pass on the double yellow line. My cop buddy tells me that here in GA, even double vehicular manslaughter charges carry just a slap on the wrist. Apparently, judges and juries don't want to ruin the rest of someone's life because they made a mistake. At least this POS has a life to live.
Wes, Jay's stepson who witnessed the accident at least beat the hell out of the driver there at the scene. May be the only justice our family gets.
