Does anybody still hunt tree rats or did that die with your youth like it did with mine?
I am considering picking it back up with a longbow, however.

I still hunt 'em when I have the chance. Can't wait to get Lil Boudreaux out there an hunting them with me. I typically do my deer scouting on squirrel hunting trips.

When I lived in South Louisiana, the squirrel season opener was like a national holiday! Them folks took it serious, I mean! Lots of 'em hunted from boats, just drifting down the smaller rivers and bayous. Some (lots) used squirrel dogs. They made it very entertaining.
The longbow with blunts would also make it entertaining. I actually fired off a couple of arrows at a squirrel perched on the side of a tree the other day in back of the house. Flu Flu arrows whizzed by him (shot twice) and he just about messed on himself, I think. But other than that, no harm came to him...

I've hunted them floating down a bayou before, but remember, I did grow up in Louisiana.
