OK- First, I love dogs- no doubt about it. Now- my kids are using the full court press to get one. Black Lab would work for me but here is my concern. My wife and I both work. Kids are in school so nobody is home from 7 am to 5 pm. My point is this is not fair to the dog. I can't keep him outside or let a pup run the house and do his thing. Garage may be an option but I don't want to clean dog mess every night. Am I missing something shy of doggy day care which makes no sense to me.

I did the Lab thing several years ago. The boy begged us for a dog and we got the lab believing him as he swore to take good care of her.
You know the rest of the story. He lasped into reality within about two or three weeks and had to me asked every day if he'd taken care of the dog. She later became our responsibility and we moved her in with another family that took great care of her for the remainder of her long and happy life. She became an inside dog and thrived on the attention she was given. Of course, when she was with us, she chewed everything in sight, dug holes in the yard, and just did what came naturally to her. We are not good with the training of dogs around here.
If you and yours are not READY to commit to the total care and feeding and raising of the animal, skip the unpleasantness associated with a dog that you just don't have time for. It will only wind up breaking your heart in the long run.
If this sounds cold to anyone reading this, that's fine. I just know the truth about kids and dogs and promises to tend to their needs.

A pet is a full time commitment, not a convenience to quell the kids rants. To be fair to the dog, just wait until the kids are older or the situation changes where the proper amount of time and training can be given to the dog.

I love labs and would love to see everyone give one a good home. With that said, ducthman and 60 are correct. It's almost the same committment as having a new baby in the house. If you don't have the time for it, you will just grow to resent the dog and it's not fair to the dog.

Apparently Doc is some kind of expert on gerbils and has been holding back his knowledge and fame from the rest of us. See attached pics. (BTW Doc, you've just been nuked with a couple of W87 MIRVs)

I was on my way to the hunting property the day after I started this and reassured myself it was not fair to the dog- I was just checking to see if I was missing something shy of doggy day care.
So, no dog and I think i will pass on the rodent issues as well. Thanks for the more serious responses.
