I know that a few of you were promised awesomely planned and executed duck hunts in NELA by a former member of this board. Some of you (Mack/Eddie) were not included in those plans.
I also know that those awesome duck hunts haven't happened. So, I'm trying to put together another NELA waterfowl hunting trip. With the weather in the 70's still, I can't promise how awesome it will be. What I can tell you is that NELA is USUALLY covered up with snow geese in February and March. I can also tell you that a good friend of mine from high school has a part-time guide service outta Oak Grove, LA, and hunts not far from the blind my cousin leased a few years ago. In fact, we drive right by that blind. If any of you remember seeing flashing Mojo wings to our 1:00 way off in the distance and hearing much more shooting from there, well that is Stan's blind.
The blind currently has flooded rice in front of it, with dry fields around the other sides. Stan has access to those fields and others. After duck season closes, he starts earnestly scouting for spots to set up on geese. He has 6 layout blinds and several dozen goose decoys, including kites and whirley birds to get good motion.
Stan has a mobile home 2 miles from the blind that serves as camp. It'll easily sleep 6 of us, plus him and his dogs. Stan has offered my group a discounted rate for the conversation season hunts and lodging. I don't yet know what that rate is, but I'll be there in a few weeks and will find out.
I've never been on the conservation hunt, but it is a close to no-holds-barred as you can get. No plugs required, extended magazines allowed, as is electronic calls. There are NO limits! On one hunt by himself, Stan stopped with 40 birds, several of which were banded.
The hunters will have to be agile (but Stacie can still come) and flexible as we may be hunting from layout blinds and then putting on a stalk on the geese.
Who is interested?

Devin and I would both like to go IF I don't draw any serious competition in the upcoming election. I would think by the end of January we'll know if it's gonna be balls-to-the-walls door knocking or not. And, if it is, all of you lazy asses--including Stacey--need to be here knocking on doors.

Conservation season hunt on the Fowl Play Flyway in $100/day. $75/day for your kid if you are also hunting. Includes lodging, which is an 18x80 mobile home 2 miles from the hunting fields.
We will have to help set up/take down decoy spreads. Fowl Play has 7 layout blinds, so if you have one you may need to bring it also. We may set up in a different location 2x per day based on the birds.
Looking at one of the last 2 weekends in February. What looks good for everyone?

If red goes I definitely may go, I need to talk to him about those lame restrictions he wants on public land in Ga. But then again he will probably puss out like he did when he deleted my threads.

I'm still debating on whether or not to go. It will my basketball team's tournament and we are tied for 1st place after today. I hate to desert the team for a hunting trip. That wouldn't be a very good example for the kids. So count me in for next year cause Eli ain't playing and I for sure ain't coaching.

Reports are that ducks showed up by the 10,000s this weekend. Finally getting some duck hunting weather.
Hopefully, the geese are a few weeks behind them. Area is still holding a good number of geese, their numbers have just not multiplied like the duck numbers have -- yet.

CONSERVATION ORDER FOR LIGHT GEESE: Only snow, blue and Ross’s geese may be taken under the terms of the Conservation Order, which allows the use of electronic calls and unplugged shotguns and eliminates the daily bag and possession limits. During the Conservation Order, shooting hours begins one-half hour before sunrise and extends until one-half hour after sunset. www.ducks.org/hunting/goose-hunting/light-goose-conservation-order

Just for my own reassurance... Stan has plenty of layout blinds for the 6 of us, correct?
I called Larry Reynolds at Louisiana DWF and left a message to get info on licenses. A few places online, including Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and DU both say a valid license from any state is sufficient for Conservation Season. A few places also say no Fed Duck Stamp is required. I'll post when I hear back from the guy at LDWF.
I know all 6 of us can fit in that Excursion, but that seems... tight. Thinking about just driving since gas is cheap right now.

OK, just got a call back from Larry Reynolds at LDWF.
You are, in fact, required to have a license and Fed stamp to hunt light geese during the conservation season in Louisiana. He told me the best way to do this, if we're only there for a few days, is to buy the Non-Resident 1-day Small Game and Waterfowl license, which is ~ $29, for each day you'll be hunting. You do need the HIP Cert, which is of course, free. And you do need a Fed Duck Stamp.
That's from the horse's mouth.
So we are definitely hunting Friday and Saturday, what about Sunday morning?

Stan has at least 1/2 dozen layouts, and I'm taking mine as well. No worries if you want to drive separately. It will provide plenty of room for gear.
Hoping to leave town between 6:00 - 7:00 am next Thursday so that we can get to Vburg by lunch time and meet up with Rowdy there. He may be joining us as well.
All information I've seen says a valid hunting license in any state is what is needed for the conservation season hunt.

Appreciate the gesture Emu, but not sure how we'd get em. Sounds like we'll have just enough, though.

Disappointing news. Stan scouted most of the day Saturday and only saw about 200 snows/blues. Spoke to a group of guys with dozens of decoys out and said they had not fired a shot. Stan says it's not worth the 8 hour drive.
Thanks for the offer Emu, but it doesn't look like we'll be needing them either. Weather screwed up the birds this year. Hopefully we can make this trip next year.

going quail hunting in Tignall saturday morning, instead. must kill something soon! Post pictures. I think I'm gonna go pick up some tractor implements - disc harrow, spring tooth harrow, and a PTO hopper/spreader. Then will probably disc up an area and plant some chufa. Maybe by the end of turkey season it'll be attracting them. Of course this all depends on the weather. Also still need to cut down a few more trees at the farm for a place to put the bunk house.

That sucks...I was hoping y'all would have a good trip. Red I'm just glad Stan is honest about the chances of the hunt. That would've been a big investment in time and a little $$$ to go chase 200 birds. He even said he was done. Not worth the 1.5 hour drive from his house to the camp.

Nice to have an honest guide. That's how you get repeat business.
