Gwinnett BOC Commissioner has resigned, reports say. Her son also faces cocaine charges.
Gwinnett County District 1 Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, whose district includes Suwanee and Duluth, reportedly has been charged by federal authorities with bribery, according to published reports.
Lasseter, a former mayor of Duluth, resigned her Gwinnett position Thursday, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
According to a federal complaint unsealed Thursday, Lasseter accepted $35,000 in bribes last year for her vote and influence involving a development on Boggs Road, the AJC reported.
A court hearing for the three defendants is scheduled for Thursday, an indication that some or all of the defendants could be entering guilty pleas. Lasseter resigned her office today, her attorney said.
Also charged are Lasseter's son, John Fanning, and businessman Carl Cain. Fanning and Cain are also charged with possession with the intent to distribute cocaine, the AJC reported.
In September, the federal complaint reportedly said, Fanning and Cain flew to the New York area to assist in collecting what they thought would be a multiple-kilogram shipment of cocaine. They spent the night in New York and flew back with "four kilograms of purported cocaine," and Fanning and Cain each took possession of two kilograms of the substance so they could deliver it to a prospective buyer, the complaint said.
Patch will have more details soon on this development.

How the headlines have changed is just a few short months:

DULUTH -- Shirley Fanning Lasseter will end her decades-long political career at the end of the year.
#Lasseter announced Monday she would not seek a second term as a county commissioner.
#"It's sad, but I've got a very good feeling of accomplishment," Lasseter said. "It's time for me to enjoy my family and my grandchildren."
#After 14 years as Duluth's mayor, Lasseter joined the Board of Commissioners in 2009. Her term has been marked by the death of her husband and many health ailments.
#"I'm proud of finishing up (a service delivery settlement with cities) and having a balanced budget and everybody getting along," Lasseter said of the struggles the board has gone through in recent years. "They are all complete and behind us. ... Nobody has to worry about that coming in after me. They've got a clean slate coming in."
#So far, two people have announced they would seek the District 1 commission seat, which includes the Duluth and Suwanee area. Suwanee Councilman Jace Brooks and accountant Laurie McClain have both begun campaigns as Republicans.
#Lasseter said she expected more people to enter the race, which will include a July primary and November general election.

I guess that "feeling of accomplishment" is the $35k bonus you received illegally as you were planning your retirement?

This could get interesting. You know if you're sitting in the car while your buddy knocks off the local 7-11 (even if you didn't know what he was doing) you are an accomplice.
